The problem is that database cluster is CPU-bound, which is good and bad: bad of course because it sucks being limited by something, but good in that this is the first time we've ever been CPU-bound on a database machine, so the I/O system we're using is doing awesome.
We had a choice between:
-- read/write free users on that cluster, but 10 second page load times for all free users
-- read-only free users on just that cluster, and 0-1 second response times for all users
We chose the "for the good of the many" approach.
We have new hardware ordered but it'll be like a week before we get it, and some days after that while it's racked and setup and tested. So in the meantime we're doing the rearrange dance.
If you have a paid account, you shouldn't be affected by any of this.
And before anybody thinks this is some Six Apart conspiracy to sell more paid accounts, consider: 1) I'm not linking to the paid account page, and 2) this has happened to us
like a dozen times in the past. We're always growing too fast for our own good. Fortunately we finally got another cabinet, so we have room to grow again.
Sorry, bear with us. Between rearranging and getting new stuff, we'll have it all working again.
